The challenge
An international research team has been working together with stakeholders from various disciplines on overarching strategies for a transition to an ecologically, socially and economically sustainable environment.
The diversity of the project results in different target groups which the website intends to reach. The scientific findings, that will be developed over the next few years, are intended to reach political decision-makers, economic and industrial organisations, interested parties from science and education as well as civil society in order to raise awareness and call for action.
Solution
In collaboration with the project partners AIT Austrian Institute of Technology and Smart Cities Consulting GmbH, we defined the goals and interfaces for the website in order to conceptualise the content.
This resulted in a meaningful homepage that explains the project goal and the challenges we face in an accessible way and invites users to take action. The various menu items invite users to explore the pages.
UX/UI design
A consistent visual identity guides users through the WordPress-based website in a clear and structured way. In this case, it was important to adapt the design to the seriousness of the topic and, at the same time, not convey any heaviness. Illustrations, icons and a modern look and feel help to simplify the complexity; real images, on the other hand, convey realistic scenarios and the urgency of the climate crisis.
The consequences of the climate crisis affect our world in different ways. The project team has been researching how we can deal with this in different regions and contexts without causing further emissions. For this purpose, we created meaningful icons and images. Clever widgets improve the user experience as information can be filtered for specific target groups.
Appealing state-of-the-art Lottie animations support the transfer of knowledge. ↓
The website is the central hub for all communication activities. Local and global events as well as blog posts on scientific developments for internal and external interested parties are announced in the menu item “Activities”.
Storytelling
Selecting suitable measures in the fight against the climate crisis is a complex process. We use accessible infographics to show the impact of certain measures in a wider context. Stories of fictional characters are used to reflect on decision-making processes and show the consequences.
Currently, we are also working on the KNOWING app, which conveys connections in a playful and interactive way via non-linear storytelling, contributes to climate literacy and encourages participatory involvement in various regions.
About the research project:
Horizon Europe is the EU’s most important funding programme for research and innovation. It combats the climate crisis, contributes to the realisation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and strengthens the EU’s competitiveness and growth. In four different regional contexts, an international research team is investigating how we humans can deal with the challenges posed by the specific climate impacts on certain aspects of our lives.
